SULFUR DI-OXIDE
Molecular Formula: SO2; Molecular Mass: 64.06g/mol; Density: 2.6288 kg/m3(gas); Dissolves in water (94 g/L) to form sulfurous acid with liberation of heat; Colorless, toxic and pungent gas with irritating smell.
Sulfur dioxide is an intermediate product in the production of sulfuric acid, which is oxidized to sulfur trioxide, and then converted to oleum, which is made into sulfuric acid.
Uses:
- Used as a preservative
- On account of being strong reducing agent, if find use in bleaching processes
- As clarifying agent in wine industry
- For producing bisulfite salts of sodium and potassium
- For producing sulfur from hydrogen sulfide gas
